Roy Ka-Wei LEE 

I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Okanagan, and a Canada Research Chair in Human-Centered AI. I lead the Social AI Studio - a dedicated research group focused on developing cutting-edge social artificial intelligence systems.

My research sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence, social computing, computational social science, and natural language processing. I am interested in building AI systems that better understand people, cultures, values, and social contexts, while making digital environments safer and more trustworthy. My work spans online trust and safety, culturally aware and pluralistic AI, multimodal AI, human-AI interaction, and responsible AI agents.

I received my Bachelor's, Master's, and Ph.D. degrees in Information Systems from Singapore Management University (SMU), where I was advised by Professor Lim Ee-Peng. Before joining UBC, I was an Associate Professor and Cheng Tsang Man Early Career Chair Professor at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD).

I remain closely connected to Singapore's AI and online-safety ecosystem as an Adjunct Senior Scientist at the Centre for Advanced Technologies in Online Safety (CATOS) and a Smart Nation Fellow, where I work with researchers and engineers from GovTech Singapore on responsible AI and related public-sector AI initiatives.

Opportunities: I am building the Social AI Studio at UBC Okanagan and am interested in working with motivated Ph.D., Master's, and undergraduate students, as well as postdoctoral researchers and research assistants.
